Defining the contents and boundaries of ethics and transparency in democracy; corruption, inefficiency and waste in the public sector: ethics and transparency as a solution; new forms of democracy: how effective in terms of ethics and transparency”. These are the items on the agenda of the First International Talks on “Public Transparency and Ethics; a challenge for democracy”, which the Council of Europe (CoE) will be promoting in Strasbourg today and tomorrow, in partnership with the Alsatian city. ”Making citizens make their peace with politics and trust the state again”, overcoming “electoral apathy”, are “issues that are felt as urgent by the democracies of many countries”, state Thorbjørn Jagland, secretary general of the CoE, and Roland Ries, senator and Mayor of Strasbourg, as they presented the initiative that, along with the 6th Summer University for Democracy “Ethics and Politics” that ended yesterday, offers a preview of the World Forum on Democracy of Strasbourg, which will take place for the first time in 2012. Guest speakers at the two-day conference include Dominique Wolton (French National Scientific Research Centre); Alain Beretz (president of Université de Strasbourg; Michelle Cini (professor of European policies at Bristol University).
