MADRID WYD: VIA CRUCIS, YOUNG EGYPTIANS AND IRAQIS WILL BEAR THE CROSS TOO

10:12 – MADRID WYD: VIA CRUCIS, YOUNG EGYPTIANS AND IRAQIS WILL BEAR THE CROSS TOO

There will be Egyptians and Iraqis too among the young people who will bear the Cross in Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid, during the Via Crucis with Benedict XVI on Friday 19th August, one of the highlights in the Spanish WYD. It was revealed to SIR, in an interview (click here), by mgr. Makarios Tewfik, Coptic bishop of Ismayliah, Egypt, and father Saad Sirop Hanna, parish priest in Baghdad. 300 will come from Egypt, 86 from Iraq. “Great was our joy when he heard the news from the Pontifical Council for the Lay that a delegation of 10 of our young people will be bearing the Cross during one of the Stations of the Cross. 10 young Indians will be with them”, mgr. Tewfik says. The Iraqis are equally happy: “we are getting ready in a very special way for this Via Crucis. After all, our life is a daily Via Crucis, surrounded as we are by violence, abuse, lack of rights and justice”, explains father Hanna, who in 2006 was abducted and tortured for 27 days before he was released. In the interview, the two men tell about the preparations that are going on in Madrid, without hiding their concern that some of their young people may take advantage of the WYD and stay in Europe: “we are concerned about that, so we feel responsible for selecting the most committed young people, to be sure they will go back home”.
